Background

Hume is a platform that provides the AI toolkit to measure, understand, and improve how technology affects human emotion. Users can utilize Hume’s science-backed API to measure human expressive behavior in images, videos, audio, and text and build applications that better predict users’ intents, preferences, experiences, and outcomes.

Due to NDA restrictions, I am unable to share the specifics or visuals of my work, so please contact me: jasminewschen@gmail.com if you’re interested in hearing more!

Overview

From June 2022 through August 2023, I worked with Hume’s AI research scientists, creative technologists, and COO to fulfill UI/UX and graphic design needs across Hume’s website, Playground, and Transfer Learning Platform.

Here are some things I worked on:

Spearheaded UI design for asset library (multi-file preview, asset filters, file selection), overview page, topic map, and camera controls

Designed mobile versions of Hume’s sign-up and log-in flow, Beta landing page, and menus

Created graphics for monthly newsletter, convention certificates, and Hume’s website (use case illustrations, dataset and model thumbnails)

Presented work to team of engineers, AI research scientists, and creative technologists

Reflections &Takeaways

My time with Hume was not only a blast, but also wonderfully insightful and fruitful. From collaborating with specialized & technical team members and working in a novel space like AI, I was able to leave with valuable takeaways that have shaped me into a better designer and agent of change — some of those takeaways being:

Designing for an unfamiliar problem space.

Having never worked on AI projects prior to this internship, I had the opportunity to learn new approaches to design and face unfamiliar challenges while working on various features throughout Hume’s ecosystem (e.g. designing an intuitive visualization for verbal patterns in a topic map and the emotions associated with them). Another major lesson I learned throughout this past year was how to conduct proper reconnaissance before designing for a technical feature (and not being afraid to ask questions or leverage my team).

Designing for a large and diverse user base

Hume’s users range from companies focused on gaming & immersive content, to financial forecasting, to education technology. As such, I honed my ability to create designs that are scalable and universally intuitive for a wide variety of users and personalities.

Driving home a cohesive brand through small and large details.

What drew me to Hume when I was an applicant was 1) the human-centered mission, and 2) the welcoming, cohesive branding. When I joined the team, I aimed to tie back all my designs to Hume’s brand identity and propel it through every single pixel. The experience refined my ability to design intentionally and think meticulously, a habit that has proven immensely helpful in my other roles and projects.

Thank you to the Hume team! :)
